Staff Development: In-Person and Annual Programs for Coaching Staffs and Athletic Departments
Your assistants are going to interview for head jobs whether you develop them or not. The ones who have never been told what a committee scores will finish second and come back frustrated, or finish first somewhere else and leave you a hole. The ones who have will be ready when the job opens inside your building, and will recruit, retain, and lead better in the meantime because the same four criteria describe good coaching at every level.
Staff Development brings those four criteria to your staff in person: Vision, Value Add, Transferable Skills, Culture and Fit, taught by someone who has used them to hire head coaches and to be hired as one. One sport's staff, a group of head coaches, or a whole athletic department.
Session topics
- Career advancement. How the market reads a coach, the three-cycle rule, and what to build before the phone rings.
- Developing a network. The difference between people who know you and people who would call an AD for you, and how to move names from one list to the other.
- Becoming the next great head coach. A case study of a real search from the inside: what the committee wanted, who they interviewed, why the winner won.
- Emotional intelligence. Self-awareness, reading a room, and the conversations coaches avoid.
- The need for feedback. Why strong coaches stop getting it, how to ask for it, and what to do with it when it stings.
- The Teaching Cycle. Objective, Set, Skill, Teach, Train, Assess: the six-step standard for a practice or a meeting, installed across a staff with the scorecard and the four-week rollout, using your coaches and your film.
Two ways to bring it in
- Single session, $3,500, travel included. A 30-minute planning call with the athletic director or head coach, a half-day (three-hour) session on campus built around your staff, and the session materials afterward.
- Annual program, $12,000, billed at $1,000 per month. Twelve monthly sessions: ten virtual and two on campus. After each session, a short written note to the athletic director on what the staff worked on and what we are seeing. Includes The Search Playbook for the athletic director and recordings of every virtual session for coaches who miss one. Four departments at a time.
What it gets you
- A staff that knows what it is being developed toward and can see itself getting there.
- Head coaches who stop losing assistants to the first bigger title and start placing them, which is a recruiting advantage for a decade.
- For the athletic director: a read on who in the building is ready, from someone who has no stake in the answer.
- The vocabulary of a search, shared across the department, so that when a job opens the internal candidates and the committee are speaking the same language.
For the athletic director. This is the staff development line in the budget that you can explain to a president, because the outcomes are retention, readiness, and a succession plan you can show on a page.
For the head coach. Bring it to your own staff. The session is built around your people, and the planning call is where we find out what they need.
The single session is paid at checkout and books the planning call; you will receive a scheduling link by email within one business day and we confirm the campus date on that call. The annual program's first monthly payment is taken at checkout and the remaining eleven are billed monthly under a short written agreement sent before the first session. The Coach Development Kit and The Teaching Cycle are the self-run versions of this work: one for developing a coach over a year, one for how every coach on the staff teaches a session.
