The first year as a head coach is the loneliest job in the building. Everyone on your staff works for you, the AD evaluates you, the players read you, and the one person you used to call for advice now has an opening you might want someday. Athletic directors have the same problem with a harder edge: a coach who needs to go, a donor who will not let it happen, and nobody in the department you can think out loud with. Most people at this level work through the hard problems alone, and the record shows it.

Performance Coaching is six months of structured, confidential work with an advisor who has sat in the AD's chair, the head coach's chair, and the search consultant's chair. It is built for the head coach new to the job, the athletic director working through a hard problem, and the assistant who is ready to lead and wants to arrive ready.

How it works

  • Thirteen 60-minute calls, every other week, by phone or video, over six months.
  • Availability between calls. When the problem is happening on a Tuesday, you do not wait until the next Thursday.
  • One in-person visit to your campus, included. A second is available at cost. On the visit we watch a practice or a staff meeting and score it on the Teaching Cycle, so the feedback is about something we both saw.
  • A written, individualized development plan at the six-month mark: what we worked on, what changed, and what you keep working on. It is built around the problems you brought, not a curriculum.
  • A mutual checkpoint at month three. Either side can end there with no further payments. It lowers your risk at the decision point and keeps the engagement honest.

What it gets you

  • A sounding board with no stake in your department's politics and no interest in your job.
  • Decisions made once, with the trade-offs named, instead of revisited every week.
  • A staff, a roster, and an AD relationship managed on purpose in the year that sets the tone for the next four.
  • For the AD: a plan for the coach, the donor, the search, or the reorganization, built with someone who has run each of them.

Terms

  • Individual: $950 per month on a six-month commitment ($5,700 total), billed monthly.
  • Institutional, when the department is paying: $1,250 per month, which includes a second campus visit and a written mid-point report to the athletic director.
  • Six clients at a time, so that availability between calls means something. Engagements begin when a seat opens.
  • By application. Every engagement starts with a 30-minute fit call before either side commits.

What it is not. It is not therapy, it is not a job search service, and it is not a shortcut around your athletic director. Everything discussed is confidential, and nothing is shared with your institution unless you choose the institutional rate and the mid-point report that comes with it.

Checkout charges the first month and reserves your place. You will receive the short application and a scheduling link for the fit call by email within one business day. If either side decides on that call that it is not a fit, the first month is refunded in full. The remaining five months are billed monthly under a short written agreement.
